The truth of Ninja -Ninja Encyclopedia-

Ninja's special food

The kinds of food ninjas usually ate

Needless to say, it was demanded that a ninja (E) be a ninja 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, given that fact, diet was crucial and they were very particular about their food intake.
Firstly, as already mentioned, a ninja could not be over 60 kg in weight, basically, ninjas had simple diets and they lived a life based on Eastern medicine, which indicated that " food and medicine shared the same source ". This idea meant that "eating well made for a healthy constitution and kept sickness away". If described in detail here, according to the principle of Eastern medicine, food that is colored black raises the body temperature of a man and makes him active.
For that reason, a ninja ate a lot of black food like black sesames, unpolished rice, chinese quinces and black soybeans.
Ninjas also liked to eat quail's eggs. This was a kind of word game. There was an art called "quail hiding" in ninjutsu (Ep). This was a technique for hiding behind something without making any sound like a quail. It is said that if a man eats quail's eggs he will be good at any skill. It may be kind of a joke, but it is certain that a quail's egg is so nourished.
Basically, the food of a ninja was very similar to that of common people in the same period. Usually, their staple food was unpolished rice, millet, barnyard, yam, radishes, dried plums, pine fruits, and so on. A ninja ate millet porridge as his main dish and his side dishes were such kinds of foods. Soybeans were common for ninjas to eat especially because soybeans contain rich sources of protein and other nourishments, thatfs why a ninja prefered food made from soybeans, like Tofu, Natto, and Miso.

Why ninjas were careful about their food

Since ninjas were spies, their diet was tailored to their missions. For ninjas, everything about eating was a discipline for their missions. For example, a ninja avoided eating anything that caused bad breath before their duties, like chinese chives, leeks or garlic. Where ninjas lived, deer and wild boars lived and were able to be hunted, they rarely ate them because they believed that the meat of wild animals made their senses dulled.
Anyway, the most important thing for a ninja was to keep control over themselves and their habits. Suppose an emergency where a ninjafs food runs out, they had trained in eating everything around them including snakes, frogs, insects, weeds and even soil. There certainly exists soil that man can eat. Ninjafs even feasted as much as possible and drank massive amounts of "sake () " because it was important that they could deceive their enemies in a banquet. In short, a ninja was well trained if he was able to both handle going without food and the survival necessary and handle excessive eating and drinking. Incidentally, in the age when ninjas flourished, cigarettes got popular among people, but ninjas avoided them because the smell of cigarettes remains for a long time and it causes bad breath.

Of course, in the course of a ninjas duties, the smaller his baggage was, the better. This case naturally applies to his food too. Ninjas cooked their portable rations as small and as well-nourished as possible, and they invented some excellent foods. "Hyourougan (Ɗ) " was the one of them. This was a basic type of ninja's portable ration. The shape of a Hyourougan is spherical and about 10mm in diameter. Hyourougan is made from nonglutinous rice, fruits of the lotus, yams, fruits of the katsura, Coix, ginsengs, and crystal sugar. The taste of this food is like cinnamon and herbal medicine, and the food texture is like dumplings. According to a certain old document, a ninja could be supplied with enough energy and nourishment by eating 30 Hyourougans a day.

Finally, I am going to tell you about a " Suikatsugan () ".Suikatsugan was written about in an unknown secret book. The intention of this food was to restrain the thirst of a ninja. According to the aforesaid book, if a ninja ate 3 suikatsugans, he would be able to live 45 days without drinking water. Although it may contain an exaggeration it is true that a suikatsugan encourages the secretion of saliva so it is perhaps possible to go without drinking anything for about half a day. A Suikatsugan is a pill about 9mm in diameter. This was made of licorice, Japanese mint, kudzu starch, dried plums, smoked plums, Poria cocos, kasyu and water. As ninjas always researched about herbal medicine, it was very natural that they created such kind of foods. Actually, many of their hometowns were famous as the birthplace of medicinal herbs like Kouga.
