Ninja uses Manriki-Gusari secretly

Manriki-gusari (–œ—͍½) is a one of the secret weapons of the ninja. The shape of manriki-gusari is quite simple. Weights are attached on both ends of the weapon and these weights are connected with a chain. The length of the chain is different depending on the ninja school itfs from. Generally they weigh between 300 to 400g.
Basically, manriki-gusari is a self-defence weapon. It is so tiny that Ninjas can bring it in their pocket. They are used in a variety of ways. Firstly, when facing an opponent from a short distance, the ninja swings the weight and hits the opponent's face. If a ninja took it from his pocket suddenly, it would be hard for his enemy to expect the attack. Or when the enemy has some kind of weapon, the ninja would throw the weight at it or the hand of the enemy, or coil the arm with the chain of the manriki-gusari. Then, the ninja could deprive the enemy of the use of their arms.
In the case of close combat, a ninja could hit the head of his enemy with a weight directly and he could strangle the neck of the enemy with chain of the manriki-gusari. Furthermore from a long distance, the ninja would throw the manriki-gusari itself too at the feet of his target by throwing it in a spinning motion, then the manriki-gusari would cling to their foot and a the ninja could gain some time to escape to the next raid. The ninja could also use the weapon like a kusarigama. The ninja would swing a part of the weight from a long range for a threat or the first attack, he would throw the manriki-gusari at the arms of his enemy or the enemy himself, then throw another for the finishing blow.
In short, manri-gusari was a very useful weapon for ninjas as they could be used from any kind of distance against their enemies.
